Executed in pencil against stark white, this exploration of line references Taoist concepts that are a regular theme of Richard Lin’s work but that he seems to process through a western art historical lens, alluding to American minimalism alongside architects including Le Corbusier. Lin was beginning to exhibit internationally around the time this work was produced, following his first solo shows at the ICA and then at Gimpel Fils in 1969. In this example, Lin varies the thickness of line on the individual linear forms which creates a meditative, contemplative feel emphasised further by the shapes overlapping in places.
