Doggett spent her summers painting, including during regular visit Cornwall during the 1920s. Many of these, including the present work, were then included in Doggett’s solo exhibition, ‘August In England’, at The Fine Art Society in 1934. Doggett had studied under Walter Sickert and Harold Gilman and, for this catalogue, fellow artist Charles Ginner wrote the introduction. The Observer review of the show reads "Lovers of good painting have been watching her work, yet this is the first one-woman show she has ventured to give. Such modesty is in keeping with the restrained and unaggressive character of her pictures.. her perfect control of ‘colour tone’. Everything in her art blends into a very personal and harmonious whole".
