Ruth Doggett 1881-1974

Biography

Ruth Doggett was born in Camberwell though moved to Cambridge by 1901 and studied at the city's School of Arts and Crafts between 1904 and 1909. After moving back to London in 1911, she enrolled at the Westminster School of Art, where her teachers included Walter Sickert, and found success with a school award in 1913. From that year Doggett became a Member of the newly-formed London Group, though she did not exhibit until 1920, and for the following two years was also taught by Harold Gilman. She exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, London, and Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, with a solo exhibition held at the Fine Art Society in 1934. The show was titled 'August in England' and the foreword written by Charles Ginner, noting that 'Doggett approaches landscape with poetical feeling and intense love of nature.' In 1939, she returned to Cambridge to live with her parents on Long Road.
