E.C. (Teddy) Hodgkin (1913-2006) was a journalist and foreign editor at The Times. Helen Sutherland was close to the Hodgkin family (see N. Gray (intro.), exhibition catalogue, 'The Helen Sutherland Collection: a Pioneer Collection of the 1930s', Arts Council, 1970), and it was Helen Sutherland who encouraged Teddy Hodgkin to purchase the present painting. Teddy Hodgkin wrote a short, unpublished memoir about Helen Sutherland (Tate archive TGA 958.1).
