A study for the painting 'Goats, Switzerland' of 1936.
In 1933 and again in 1935, Stanley Spencer visited Switzerland at the invitation of his patron, businessman and financier Sir Edward Beddington-Behrens. Beddington-Behrens hoped the Alpine scenery would inspire Spencer and re-ignite his interest in landscape painting. The present lot is thought to have been executed during Spencer's 1935 visit to Zermatt, with Patricia Preece, who later became his second wife. The drawing depicts a series of stone chalets containing the Stations of the Cross, which Spencer first saw in 1933 on the old path from Saas Grund to Saas Fee.
