Trevelyan visited Italy on several occasions, often accompanied by Mary Fedden. These journeys inspired both etchings and paintings such as 'Erosion' which reflect Trevelyan's fascination with the Mediterranean landscape. In this work, his remarkable ability to blend abstraction with topographical observation, transforms the rugged hills of Tuscany into a patchwork of fractured planes and calligraphic lines. His interest is in the effects of erosion on the parched terrain which he distills into a vivid interplay of ochres, whites and dark contour lines.
