One of Bendall's earlier works, this was painted around the time that she was exhibiting in Paris and Toulouse. Throughout her long career, she drew upon her intimately familiar surroundings for inspiration, achieving renown for her vibrant still lifes, flower pieces and garden paintings. The main influence in her career, clearly shown in her palette, was her friend Henri Matisse - indeed Jean-Gérard Matisse, his son, proposed to her.
