Bernard Farmer 1919-2002
Bernard Farmer was born in London in 1919, and studied at Chelsea Polytechnic School of Art. He was a painter and maker of abstract constructions and lived in London. In 1956 the London AIA Gallery held his first solo exhibition, further solo exhibitions were held in 1964 at Heal's Art Gallery and in 1982 at Angela Flowers Gallery, and his works have been shown at LG, New Vision Centre and St Martin's Gallery. In 1970 he exhibited at the London Circle Gallery, and was represented in the Arts Coucil Collection. Farmer once said that "the more simple I can make an image the better I like it... the less can always expand the mind, whereas more either constricts or becomes too much." In 1961 he became co-organiser of the AIA Gallery Directions-Connections with Malcolm Hughes and in 1963 had work reproduced in 'Art as Understanding' by Frank Avray. Adrian Heath, the painter, was a strong advocate of Farmer's work.
