Ben Henriques b. 1967

Biography

Ben Henriques’ painting is rooted in the tradition of realism, with a focus on intimate still lifes and flower paintings.

Born in Cheshire, his family moved to Scotland when he was nine. Ben attended the University of Newcastle (1986-90) where he studied Fine Art. After graduating, he moved to London, where he shared his Brixton flat with Edmund Chamberlain. During this time Ben had work exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, London, and a joint show in Glasgow.

After a short time living near Borough Market, in 1994 Ben made a journey to South Asia to work and travel extensively. On his return to London, both Lefevre and Browse & Darby exhibited his still lifes with Agnew's dedicating a room to his paintings in 1999. His first solo exhibition was held in 2001, with further works included in 'Discerning Eye' exhibitions, Mall Galleries, London; ‘Economy and Ecstasy,’ RAAB Galerie, Berlin; the Royal Portrait Society’s annual exhibition, London; and art fairs internationally.

As an artist, Ben is very involved with his materials, using cold-pressed linseed oil he acquires direct from the Surrey farm where it is made. He prefers to allow the materials to speak for themselves, leaving his paintings unglazed to display their quality. Ben now divides his time between London and the West Coast of Scotland.
