This is from a group of paintings that Coker made in 1957 based on drawings from his visit to Audierne in Brittany. Apart from the jetty, he made notes and drawings of the lighthouse, wave-forms, fields, stone walls and vegetable plots. The paintings were exhibited the same year in his second solo exhibition at the Zwemmer Galleries, then owned by Michael Chase. Other works from the '57 show are now in the collection of the Tate, Birmingham City Art Gallery and Heckfield Place.
