Lynn Chadwick 1914-2003

Lynn Chadwick was born in 1914 in Barnes, London, and is a sculptor in iron and maker of mobiles. He trained as a draughtsman in offices of architects then worked in private practice until 1946 after serving as a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm during the Second World War. He received an award from Ascher for textile design and a commission for exhibition stands from the Aluminium Development Association, which encouraged him to experiment with mobiles. His first solo exhibition took place in 1950 at Gimpel Fils. He executed three constructions for the South Bank Exhibition in 1951 and was awarded a prize in 1953 in The Unknown Political Prisoner Sculpture Competition. In 1956 he was awarded the International Sculpture Prize for his exhibition at the Venice Biennale, an exhibition which later toured Vienna, Munich, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels and lastly London. He was awarded first prize at the Concorso Internazionale del Bronzetto held at Padua in 1959, and a C.B.E. in 1964. His work in included in the Deutsche Bank collection. Chadwick died in 2003.
