Paul Newland b. 1946
Paul Newland was born in 1946 in North-West London, where he grew up. He studied at the Harrow School of Art after which he attended the Slade School. He was awarded a French government scholarship with which he made a pilgrimage to aix-en Provence. In 1975 he discovered watercolour painting. Newland exhibited at the Alresford Gallery in 2003, at Abbott and Holder in 2004 and 2005, and at Alpha House Gallery in 2007. Newland now regularly exhibits with the New English Art Club and the Royal Watercolour Society, of which he gained membership in 2002 and 1991 respectively. He has won a number of awards, including the Royal Academy Summer Show Best 'Interior' in 1995, their House and Garden Award in 1997 and the Hugh Casson Drawing Prize in 2008, as well as the Turner Watercolour Award in 2008. Newland's works are now held in Collections at the Sheffield Art Gallery, National Library of Wales, and several other private collections across England, France, Austria and the United States.
