Biography

After studying Fine Art at Medway College of Art and then at Falmouth College of Art, Guy Rutter went to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama for a Diploma in Scene Painting.

He has worked as a scene painter for theatre, film and TV, including work for Dennis Potter, Mike Leigh, Guy Ritchie and most recently working on Slow Horses series for Apple TV.

Rutter has always maintained his own studio practice alongside this work and in the last six years his own painting and printmaking has taken precedence. He spent time at Cyprus College of Art on an artist’s residency, and the paintings he made there were exhibited at Unit 5 Gallery, Shoreditch as part of a group show. Since then he has shown at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (2024), Newlyn Art Gallery (2025) and most recently at London Original Print Fair with Brook Street Gallery, and also several smaller shows including the Lido Stores in Margate and at Frank in Whitstable. He was invited by 57w57 Gallery to show two of his paintings in New York, and in 2025 and 2026 he was selected to show in Iceland, London and Copenhagen in Postcards for Seyoisfjorour, curated by Hardpainting. He was a winner of a prize at the Dubai Open Exhibition. His work is in many private collections and has been shown internationally including in New York, Iceland, Copenhagen and Dubai.

Rutter makes abstract geometric paintings and prints, often initiated by a chance glimpse of colour or shape during his daily activities. Recently he has been producing a series of paintings and prints ‘Sennen’ a series named after the beach in Cornwall and reflecting the vibrancy of the colours there in summer. The underlying stripes of colour speak to the dress, towels and swimming costumes of the beachgoers, as well as the kaleidoscope of sand and sky.

In his practice he is investigating and creating a visual vocabulary based on the placement of iconic geometry within formal compositions. The colour palette seeks to create a dynamic energy and changing mood within these compositions.

As a member of Porthmeor Printmaking Workshop, Rutter developed a series of monoprints which were exhibited at Frank in Whitstable, Kent in 2024 and at Newlyn Art Gallery in September/October.
