'Gravel Pits' demonstrates Trevelyan's enduring interest in industrial compositions. Painted in his final years, the scene is simply presented: the scaffolding and silos rendered in a lattice of hard black outlines, the trucks reduced to flat, geometric shapes which are curiously balanced against the softer forms of looping tyre tracks. Earthy tones are contrasted with a vivid pool of blue water - a sharp and unexpected burst of colour in the composition.
