The starting point for this painting was the Purbeck chalk ridge west of Ballard Down. Dorset Spring and Nine Barrow Down were painted at the same time. Dorset Spring is more of a pastoral scene, a simple depiction of downland farming on the chalk. Nine Barrow Down is more about archaeological matters and the exploration of ancient mans relationship with the chalk. The use of collage emphasises the digs to uncover the past.
