In a letter to the Fine Art Society about the painting the artist wrote 'I don't remember if the picture was ever given a title - call it 'Hassan and his Groom'. The groom standing at the horse's head was a German who adored the creature. I remember his saying to me 'look at his pasterns - Hassan has insteps like a fine lady'. it was painted at Blackpool when I was living there with Carmo's three of four Seasons in the late 1920s.
