The present work is very similar in composition to the work titled Les Chapeaux à Brides, cat. no. 337 in Cecily Langdale's Catalogue Raisonée and illustrated in colour, plate 171 and exhibited at The Barbican in 1985, cat. no.120.
From the late 1920s, it belongs to a series of figure studies from the period when Gwen became more aware of Marc Chagall's work, shown here in the stylised figures and brighter colours. It is believed that the setting of the present work is the church at Meudon, the town in which she acquired a shack to use as a studio in 1929.
