The thirty paintings and drawings in this exhibition, many of which have never been seen before, come directly from the William Scott Estate.
The works cover four decades of William Scott’s artistic career, from the early 1950s through to the mid-1980s. In these compositions the artist developed some of the concepts and ideas, the ‘Themes and Variations’, for which he is best known.
Certain forms returned, sometimes transformed, many years after they first appeared; others such as the pan and bowl, remained constant, evolving gradually over time. William Scott came from humble roots and those kitchen implements connected back to his childhood in Northern Ireland.
Born in 1913, William Scott held his first solo show in London in 1942, his first solo show in New York in 1954, represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1958, was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1966, was honoured with a major retrospective at the Tate Gallery in 1972. He died in 1989.
