During the 1980s, Kim Lim’s sculptural work became increasingly more interested in stone carving, often working in marble and making prints inspired by nature concurrently as she found the disciplines of sculpture and printmaking complimentary. The power and motion of the elements, particularly that of water is central to Lim’s work as in this example which focuses on the subtleties of the movement and texture of water. Reflective of the processes she was using in her sculpture around this time, there are strong parallels between this work and much of her sculpture produced in the mature phase of her artistic practise. In particular, Rain Stone which consists of a square block of marble which has diagonal lines gauged out and is compositionally and spiritually strongly reminiscent of this work.
