This work belongs to a group of works inspired by Britian's working docklands and industrial sites. During this period, Clough was drawn to the formal language of cranes, conveyors and dockyards translating them into compositions characterised by muted, earthy palettes and an austere clarity of structure. This work demonstates Clough's distinctive ability to combine direct observation with a growing abstraction which would characterise her later work.
