John Piper had a frequent relationship with the area around Rye, particularly the harbour, which served as a significant source of inspiration for his paintings and photographs of the British landscape. Piper rented a cottage there in the early 1930s and returned often, creating famous works that featured marsh churches, beach scenes, ruins, and harbour scenes.
