Vaughan made several jewel-like studies for Walled Garden. Despite this, he produced no oil painting with that title in 1946. Five years later he returned to the theme and made a lithograph with similar imagery and the same title. The motif of a felled tree, loosely resembling a human figure, can be traced back to the early 1940s when he made around a dozen studies for a symbolic painting, representing the fallen youth of the war. At the time he was serving in the non-combatant corps, clearing the grounds of an estate with a large walled garden. Vaughan was unable to make easel paintings while serving in the army and adopted, what he called his 'volatile' medium, consisting of ink, gouache and wax crayons.
