Mahoney and his lover, Evelyn Dunbar, were frequent visitors to the home of Bawden and Ravilious, Brick House in Great Bardfield, and were nicknamed there as 'Adam and Eve'. This painting relates to the larger work held in the Tate Gallery, London, which was purchased from the Artist by John Rothenstein (1901-1992) for the Contemporary Art Society in 1941.
