Robyn Denny is recognised as one of the great masters of British Abstract Art and a key player in transforming British Art in the late 1950s. He was inspired by Abstract Expressionism and reacting against the landscape-based painting from the St Ives School. Denny gained significant public traction in his boundary-breaking approach and experimentation in creating large-scale abstract paintings. Most notably in his participation in the monumental Situation exhibition in 1960 and subsequently represented the U.K. at the 1966 Venice Biennale (alongside Anthony Caro, Harold Cohen, Bernard Cohen and Richard Smith). In 1973, he became the youngest living artist to be given a Tate retrospective. Vibrant colours and structured linear forms are central to Denny's oeuvre and resulted in highly successful public works for patrons, for example, Austin Reed, St Thomas' Hospital and the London Church of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Denny's paintings of the 1960s and 1970s each feature combinations of block geometrical, often rectilinear, forms and strips. Painted in 1969-70, Nowhere 3, encapsulates the essence of Robyn Denny's practice, executed in precise flat application, this large-scale canvas is painted with the viewer in mind, creating art that acts directly with its surroundings. Vertical in format and composition, the painting is typical of his earlier canvases that had an upright reading. He employs datum lines, never horizontal, to fix the viewer's eye. The vertical forms are reminiscent of a doorway, a portal, an entry point, inviting the viewer to look inwardly. There are three central colours in this architectural canvas portraying an interplay of forms by exploring space and perception. Denny exhibits a distinctive compositional balance with a restricted yet bold palette, which creates both depth and luminosity. The present lot echoes the canvases he showcased in the exhibition, Place, held at the Institute of Contemporary Art in 1959, which had linear bands at their bases and were displayed as unframed works on the floor, attracting viewers to cross a threshold.
