Pissarro painted several variations of this view in 1920, reflecting his sustained interest in the landscape around Lyme Regis, where he settled later in life. The present work is thought to have been re-dated when the artist added a child in the foreground, an element not included in other recorded versions of the composition. For related versions, see 'A Catalogue of the Oil Paintings of Lucien Pissarro', compiled by Anne Thorold, London, Athelney Books, 1983, no. 308.
