John Maclauchlan Milne settled at High Corrie on the Isle of Arran around the beginning of the Second World War. Milne repeatedly painted the landscape immediately around him, particularly Corrie, Sannox Bay and Glen Sannox. These subjects became central to his later work and are represented in public collections, including 'Glen Sannox, Arran' in the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, Coventry.
Milne's distinctive palette had been profoundly shaped by his experience of France. From 1919 into the early 1930s he spent extended periods there, working in Paris and in the South of France including Cassis 1924 when Peploe and Cadell were also there. Cezanne was a particular influence and his Royal Scottish Academy obituary recalled that 'like Peploe, he saw Cezanne and was immediately conquered'.
