Derek Hyatt British, b. 1931

Biography

Derek Hyatt was born in Ilkley, Yorkshire. From 1948 to 1952 he studied at Leeds College of Art, followed by the Royal College of Art from 1954 to 1958. During his time there he also edited Ark  magazine. In 1955 Hyatt was awarded the Royal Scholar prize and in 1958 the J. Andrew Lloyd Scholarship for landscape painting. He became a visiting lecturer at Kingston School of Art in 1959, which he continued to do until 1964 when he returned to Yorkshire to teach at Leeds College of Art. He later became a senior lecturer at Leeds Polytechnic. Hyatt has held numerous solo exhibitions, the first of which was held in 1960 and consisted of several shows at the New Art Centre until 1966. He has also exhibited at the University of York, Waddingtons, Waddingtons & Tooth, Austin Desmond Fine Art and the Dean Clough Contemporary Art Gallery in Halifax. Hyatt has also taken part in group exhibitions such as the Jon Moore, the Cincinnati Biennial and the Arts Council travelling exhibitions. His works are currently held by the New York Museum of Modern British Art, the Contemporary Art Society and the Nutfield Foundation. His drawings and paintings are also held in public collections of major institutions, for example the Universities of Leeds, Oxford, Harvard and Yale, as well as the De Beers collection. Hyatt is also a published writer and poet.
