Two White belongs to a series of paintings in which Sandra Blow looked to introduce bold coloured elements into her work. Here, the two strips of paper collage are placed in direct tension, but also in perfect balance, with the understated tones of the white acrylic washes and the exposed board which dominates the rest of the composition. The colour and the placement of collage elements has been chosen with considerable care and there is a powerful sense of harmony to the structure of the composition. This use of vivid pops of colour in Blow’s work derived, in part, from the intense hues of the Pop Art of the 1960s; indeed Blow taught at the Royal College of Art when both David Hockney and R B Kitaj were students there. She was fully aware of the effects of colour and, as the title suggests, there is even a tonal shift in the white acrylics, resulting in the sensation of an embodiment of light.
